The Chase Golf Club – Sunday 22nd July
A slightly overcast day met us in Cannock as we met up at the reasonable hour of 11am for a 12pm tee off. The course, although a little scorched – as was everywhere else, looked as if it was in excellent condition.
The welcome was a good one which is more than can be said for our first group who fired their shots left, towards the out of bounds. It was great to see Dan Coney re-join us after a couple of years hiatus – I think he enjoyed reminding the first group about the out-of-bounds down the left-hand-side of the first fairway.
After I myself had a dreadful tee off I seemed to steady the ship and had a decent enough round -even managing an incredibly lucky two birdie when it looked for all intent and purpose to be, according to Mr Coney who lives a mere 3 miles away, heading towards his back garden – you win some; you lose some!
There was a certain amount of derision over the two nearest the pins as some wanted the par 3 over the water but I decided to opt for the easier choices – I missed both! As did everyone on one of the nearest the pins but not Billy Noonan who, for a second week in a row, shot nearest the pin – however can I take this opportunity to remind members that, from this point onwards, nearest the pin winners must have their names written on the card – writing ‘not Mark Jones’ will simply not be tolerated – however factual that statement may have been!
One aside; due to the fairways being so scorched it was much easier to spot the greens if, like me, you hadn’t played here before. However it wasn’t long before the sun came out and normal service was resumed!
So to the winner; it was me with a shady 37 points staving of a very close second Brendan Donnelly who scored 36 and felt he really should be the one walking away with the coveted ball marker – I don’t think I told him about my Van de Velde moments on the 18th.
A great day out with the STAGS once again, happy hacking chaps!
